New Delhi, Nov 10: India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer expressed gratitude on Monday as he continues his recovery from a serious injury sustained during the recent Australia tour, saying he was “grateful to be back” after weeks of treatment in Sydney.
Iyer had suffered a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding while attempting a catch during the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25. The injury occurred when he ran backward from point to dismiss Alex Carey and immediately collapsed, clutching his rib cage.
Following the incident, the 30-year-old was rushed to a Sydney hospital, where scans revealed internal injuries that required immediate surgery. He was later kept under observation for several days.

Sharing a brief but reassuring update on Instagram, Iyer wrote, “Sun’s been a great therapy. Grateful to be back. Thanks for all the love and care.”
According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Iyer was discharged on November 1 after specialists in both India and Australia expressed satisfaction with his progress. Team doctor Dr. Rizwan Khan stayed by his side throughout his recovery.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia extended special thanks to Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his Sydney medical team, along with Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for providing expert care during the cricketer’s treatment.
Iyer has remained in Sydney for post-surgery consultations but is expected to return to India soon. Medical experts have advised him to take several months off before resuming full training to regain fitness and ensure complete recovery.
The update comes as a morale boost for Indian cricket fans, who had expressed widespread concern after the talented batter’s sudden injury setback.
