Washington, Nov 12: Former US Representative Elaine Luria, a Democrat from Virginia and member of the Jan. 6 Committee, has announced her bid to reclaim her old congressional seat from Republican Rep. Jennifer Kiggans.
In an interview with NBC News, Luria said she was motivated by what she described as “chaos” and a “do-nothing Republican Congress.” She added, “I’ve watched the chaos here in Washington… this is the time for me to continue to serve and go back to representing Virginia’s 2nd District again.”

Luria, a former naval officer, said she intends to focus on veterans’ issues, national security, and affordable healthcare. She criticised the Trump administration’s military decisions and expressed doubts about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s leadership.
A prominent figure on the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot, Luria said she has no regrets about her role, despite facing threats and harassment. “I think I’ve always stood up for what was right, even when it wasn’t politically expedient,” she said.
If she wins the Democratic primary, Luria will likely face a rematch with Kiggans, who narrowly defeated her in 2022. Republicans have already dismissed her comeback bid, calling her an “out-of-touch liberal.”
The 2026 race is expected to be one of the most competitive House contests, as both parties fight for control of Congress amid possible redistricting changes in Virginia.
