Udupi, Feb 17: Manipal Institute of Management, Manipal had organized a two-day workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) – Practices and Management”. T Chandrasekhar, the director, PFC, TIFAC was the chief guest of the inaugural function.
M Prithviraj, executive secretary, Karnataka State Council for science and technology (KSCST); Karthik Puttaiah, CEO, Invntree, Bangalore were the guests of honour. Dr H Vinod Bhat, pro-vice chancellor, Manipal University was the president of the function. Vinay Gowda opened the proceedings by introducing all the guests of the conference. Prof P Ramakrishna Chadaga , the director of Manipal Institute of Management delivered welcome address.
M Prithviraj, while addressing the gathering, stated that Manipal is always well known for many innovations. Internet provides vast scope for innovation. India is underperforming mainly because of lack of interest in innovation, he said. He urged the youth that they should involve themselves in innovation. He gave the example of the article titled ‘Mind to market’ written by Minister Kapil Sibbal in this regard.
Karthik Puttaiah, in his address, expressed that entrepreneurs should have proper sense of IPR. He also spoke about two categories of entrepreneurs i.e. one who lack understanding of the fundamentals of IP, others who will come up with all IP. Having insufficient knowledge in understanding IP, they will lose interest in applying for patent rights. He also revealed that getting patent is not a right of grant given to a person for practicing his technology. When applying for patent, one is required to disclose the method and technique used. The process of getting patent is expensive and it takes time and effort, he said.
Dr H Vinod Bhat, in his presidential address, focused on healthcare equipments highlighting the pioneering products of Phillips. He was of the view that we are an application-oriented country and not a development-oriented country. This journey leads to national wealth both from individual and institutional contribution. He ended up with the quote ‘Cook on open domain, one will lose the right on patent’.
