New Delhi, Nov 18: Young Indian boxer Hitesh Gulia registered the biggest win of his budding career on Monday, defeating two-time World Championships medallist and Asian Games champion Sewon Okazawa of Japan at the World Cup Finals. The 70kg quarterfinal clash ended in a narrow 3-2 split verdict, sending Hitesh into the semifinals.
Joining him were Jadumani Singh (50kg), Pawan Bartwal (55kg), Sumit Kundu (75kg), and Naveen Kumar (90kg), who also triumphed in their respective quarterfinal bouts. With nine Indian boxers winning their quarterfinals, India is assured of at least 20 medals, with 11 pugilists already starting in the semifinal or final stages.

In his bout, Hitesh cleverly outscored his more experienced opponent in the opening round. Okazawa, 2021 World Champion and 2025 World silver medallist, fought back in the second round, narrowing the gap, but Hitesh capitalised on home support to land decisive blows for a memorable victory. “I had to use my mind to play against him… I assessed him and made my plans accordingly,” said Hitesh.
Armyman Pawan Bartwal also impressed, defeating World Boxing Cup Brazil gold medallist Altynbek Nursultan of Kazakhstan 5-0. Bartwal controlled tempo, displayed defensive discipline, and repeatedly pushed his opponent onto the ropes. “This is my first international medal, and I am extremely proud,” he said.
Sumit Kundu outclassed South Korea’s Kim Hyeon-tae 5-0 in the 75kg quarterfinals, while Strandja 2024 medallist Naveen Kumar displayed composure and tactical intelligence to beat Kazakhstan’s Bekzat Tangatar. Jadumani Singh opened his campaign with a dominant 50kg win over Kazakhstan’s Nurzat Ongarov, showcasing relentless attacking intent.
With stellar performances across the board, India’s boxers continue their impressive run at the 2025 World Cup Finals.
