Travis Head’s heroics put Australian opening spot in spotlight

Perth, Nov 23: Travis Head’s stunning 123 off 83 balls against England may have secured him a permanent spot as Australia’s opener, casting uncertainty over veteran Usman Khawaja’s future. Khawaja, 38, missed opening in both innings in Perth due to back spasms, allowing Head to seize the opportunity and drive Australia to a commanding eight-wicket Ashes victory. Skipper Steve Smith lauded Head’s innings as one of the best in Ashes history.

Since David Warner’s early retirement last year, Australia has struggled to find a stable opening partner, with Khawaja going through six different partners. Debutant Jake Weatherald opened alongside Head in the second innings after falling early in the first, showing promise with a composed 23.

Smith remained non-committal on Khawaja’s future, noting, “It’s probably too early to say anything… He just pulled up a bit lame early on in the game.” Head, meanwhile, expressed readiness to continue opening, saying, “I’m always putting my hand up. If the team requires it, I’m more than happy to do it and keep the option there.”

With Head’s dominant performance, Australia’s opening combination could see a significant reshuffle ahead of the Brisbane Test.
