BMC cracks down on 53 construction sites as Mumbai’s air quality worsens

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, Nov 28: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s increasingly alarming air pollution levels, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued stop-work notices to 53 construction sites found contributing to the deteriorating Air Quality Index (AQI).

The action comes at a time when Mumbai continues to grapple with rising pollution, prompting the civic body to tighten its enforcement measures. Officials confirmed on Thursday that construction sites flouting safety norms had been pulled up under the corporation’s ongoing anti-pollution drive.

The BMC reiterated that all construction zones must strictly comply with the pollution-control guidelines issued earlier. These include the mandatory installation of AQI sensors, which must remain fully functional at all times to ensure real-time monitoring of dust and emissions.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Ashwini Joshi cautioned that the civic body would not hesitate to initiate stringent action against sites where AQI sensors were found switched off, malfunctioning, or purposely disabled.

The crackdown signals the city's renewed commitment to containing dust and construction-related emissions as pollution levels continue to hover in the poor to very poor category, raising public health concerns across Mumbai.
