Panaji, Nov 29: The Goa Electricity Department’s deadline for consumers to shift electricity meters from inaccessible locations ended on Friday, paving the way for disconnections against those who failed to comply.
According to senior officials, only 35% of consumers have relocated their meters to easily accessible spots, while 65% remain in obstructed areas—inside locked homes, at unsafe heights or locations that make routine readings difficult.

“Action will start. Consumers who have not shifted their meters may face disconnection procedures,” a senior GED engineer confirmed.
Out of the 38,000 identified meters, only 12,000 have been shifted despite repeated reminders. Notices were first issued in May, giving consumers six months to comply. Chief Electrical Engineer Stephen Fernandes had warned that non-compliance would invite strict punitive action, including disconnection.
Officials noted that inaccessible meters create major challenges for meter readers, leading to missed readings, estimated bills, and frequent billing disputes. Engineers across Goa have now been directed to begin disconnections in line with departmental orders.
The move is expected to affect thousands of households that did not relocate their meters within the stipulated timeframe, marking a firm step by the department to improve billing accuracy and streamline operations.
