Mangaluru, Nov 30: A potential disaster was averted at late night after a sudden cooking gas leak was detected in an apartment located on the upper floor of a residential complex near Urwa Market. The timely alertness of the residents and the swift response of the Kadri Fire Station helped prevent a major mishap.

House owner Prashanth Nayak woke up after hearing an unusual sound from the kitchen. On checking, he noticed the gas leak. He immediately escorted his mother, wife, and child to an open area downstairs and alerted neighbours. A friend living nearby informed the fire brigade.

Fire personnel arrived promptly and found that the regulator had broken. They managed to remove it with difficulty, stopping the leak and easing the situation. Officials said that because the windows and doors had been kept open as a precaution, no major danger occurred.

A new gas cylinder had been installed just two days earlier, and it was full. The regulator switch had not been turned off. Suddenly, the regulator’s moulding broke, causing a loud noise and the gas leak. Fire officials said that if the house owner had not woken up, a disaster could have occurred. The exact cause of the regulator failure is yet to be determined.

Assistant station officer K V Gowda, leading fireman Chandrahas Salyan, driver Prabhu Mahadev, and firemen Puneeth and Karthik from the Kadri Fire Station were part of the operation.

90 percent of the refilled Gas Cylinders delivered to domestic consumers are in a very bad condition, big dents, coated with thick greasy oil, paint peeling off, the bottom support ring off shape - thereby making the Cylinder unsteady, these are just a few points proving that the empty cylinders are not tested / maintained before being refilled. As per rules - the delivery man is supposed to do a minor check before giving the receipt, sadly, they are in a mad rush, of course after collecting (demanding) their "baksheesh" - that said, GAIL pipelines / Meters have been installed a few years back - they are now rusting -

Brand new gas cylinder's regulator moulding broke on it's own implies that the cylinder was defective and should have been scrapped; the gas company should be sued for this as it would have turned into a major disaster if noone had taken immediate corrective action!

Must remember to switch off gas regulator whenever the cylinder is not in use for longer time like leaving the house or on vacation. Also, whenever felt of cooking gas smell, one must take care not to switch on any electrical appliances even light switches. Thanks to the head of the family who not only saved his family but also averted likely disaster in the building. Hats off to Fire rescue personnel for their daring operation. Thank God! 🙏
