Mangaluru: Centre declares Dakshina Kannada as export hub, says MP Brijesh Chowta

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Dec 3: The Central government has declared Dakshina Kannada as an export hub, identifying seafood and cashew as products with strong export potential, said MP Brijesh Chowta.

Under the Districts as Export Hubs (DEH) initiative, Dakshina Kannada has been officially recognised as an export destination. This recognition has drawn attention to the district’s ongoing efforts towards sustainable economic development. The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry provided the reply to a question raised by Chowta in Parliament on December 2.

Union minister Jitin Prasada, in his written reply, stated that declaring Dakshina Kannada as an export hub will help strengthen local industries, boost value-added activities, and enhance the district’s connectivity to global markets.

To support this initiative, district-level export action plans, coordination among state and district export promotion committees, customs, logistics providers, small and medium industries, testing infrastructure, common facility centres, warehouse strengthening, and promotion of e-commerce-based exports are required.

The minister further informed that the district-level export action plan is already in progress, the district has strong connectivity with the New Mangalore Port, and a district export promotion committee has also been formed.

@ Praveen, Mangalorean Superb, eye opening comments. AIE complaints lack of passengers to maintain direct flights. In that case they can take flight route via closest Intl. airport then to last destination and vise versa. Passengers are left to suffer at the mercy of monopolist rule.

Dakshina Kannada was an export hub from before; now they want 2nd terminal and make some more money? Let them start all direct flights to Mangalore, then think of the 2nd airport. From Muscat, direct flights were 3 per week. Now no flights, so many struggle to reach Mangalore. No one thinks of improving; they only think of siphoning public money into their pockets.

When I came to Kuwait in 1975:- 1 KD = Rs. 36-38 and now 1 KD fetches Rs 290 plus 1 US$ = Rs. 16 and now Rs. 90 Our economy is sky diving or only the currency value ?

You yourself mentioned 1 KWD = 290+ INR. It means currency value does not determine the strength of the country's economy. India is 5th strongest economy where as Kuwait is not even in the top 10 list!!!

Please sir, pay your attention towards discontinuation of direct flights to some GCC countries and vise versa. For example Muscat. There may be more. When Udupi Intl Airport is in the lime light why cant MP like you can influence your position for public service and benefit. There 40,000 plus expats who are working together with their family members. 40 years ago all Udupi and DK part of Kerale people from, Kasorgod, Kannur had to reach Bombay and continue onward travel by Air India. Similar problem is taking a turn instead of improving their services. Nothing is impossible. Only a true resolve can bring fruitful results🙏👍

This is great news for entire district and hoping more steps are taken for further development of the entire coastal region. However, Dakshina Kannada should be renamed as Mangaluru district. This urgently needs to be done before the commencement of the census exercise from start of next year.
