Bengaluru, Dec 3: A complaint has been filed against Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh at the High Grounds Police Station, Bengaluru, for allegedly mocking the sacred Daiva performance from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 during his appearance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28.
The complaint, lodged by Bengaluru-based advocate Prashanth M, accuses the actor of mimicking the Ullalthi Daiva and describing it as a “demon” and “female ghost,” which he says hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus, especially the Tulu-speaking community of Karnataka.

The complaint cites Sections 299, 302 and 196 of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, alleging that Ranveer Singh’s “illegal and offensive actions” caused deep emotional distress to devotees of Daivaradhane traditions.
The complainant also stated that Ranveer made derogatory remarks while praising Kantara Chapter 1 and reenacting the Daiva sequence during the IFFI closing ceremony. The actor faced widespread backlash online after videos of the incident went viral.
A day earlier, Ranveer Singh issued a public apology on his Instagram story, stating, “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance. I have always deeply respected every culture and tradition. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
According to a source quoted by Bangalore Times, Ranveer became excited on spotting Rishab Shetty among dignitaries like Rajinikanth and began mimicking the Daiva scene until Rishab politely asked him to stop.
Rishab Shetty has not yet commented on the controversy.
