New Delhi, Dec 4: In a dramatic cyber encounter that has sparked wide online discussion, a Delhi-based IT graduate claims to have flipped the script on an alleged scammer by deploying an AI-generated tracking tool — ultimately forcing the fraudster to abandon the attempt.
Sharing his experience on the social media forum Reddit, the youth stated that the scam began when he received a Facebook message from a number impersonating one of his college seniors, an IAS officer. The impostor allegedly tried to lure him into a deal involving “cheap household items” supposedly being sold by a CRPF officer. Suspicious that the real senior already had his contact number, he quickly confirmed the message was fake.
Within minutes, another number contacted him — this time projecting the identity of an Army officer and sharing photos of furniture and appliances, urging a quick payment via QR code. Realising it was part of a fraudulent racket, the youth decided he would not only resist but expose the scammer.
He claimed that he used ChatGPT to generate a fake payment page designed to secretly capture the visitor’s live location, IP details, and even a front-camera photograph. After hosting the page online, he sent the link to the alleged scammer under the pretext of uploading the QR code.
Believing the link to be genuine, the scammer reportedly clicked on it — providing the youth instant access to his details, including a clear image of the suspect. The youth then replied with the same information, turning the scam around in a matter of seconds.
The post describes the scammer’s panicked response — multiple calls from different numbers, apologies, and promises to abandon such activities.
While the viral account remains unverified, it has drawn huge attention from netizens, prompting fresh debate over online impersonation scams involving fake Army and IAS identities, as well as the ethical and legal implications of using AI-driven surveillance tools by civilians.
Cybersecurity experts have reminded users to remain cautious, emphasising that such confrontational tactics could carry risks. However, the incident has once again highlighted the growing trend of tech-savvy citizens refusing to fall prey to digital fraud.
