France, Dec 6: A festive Christmas preparation event turned tragic in the French overseas region of Guadeloupe on Friday, after a vehicle suddenly ploughed into a crowd gathered at Schoelcher Square, located near the town hall and the local church. The horrifying incident left at least 19 victims, including 10 confirmed deaths.

Reports from Radio Caraïbes Internationale (RCI) indicate that three among the survivors are battling for life with serious injuries. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

According to eyewitness accounts quoted by RCI, the driver may have suffered a medical emergency while at the wheel, leading to the loss of control. However, authorities have yet to confirm the theory. The driver reportedly did not flee and remained at the scene following the accident.

Firefighters, emergency medical teams and police rushed to the site to assist the victims. The Mayor of Sainte-Anne also reached the location and activated a crisis management team to oversee rescue and support operations for those affected by the tragic event.
