Pauri, Dec 7: Human–wildlife conflict has intensified in Pauri district, forcing the Education Department to close 55 schools after a leopard killed a man in broad daylight last week. The situation has created fear among residents, affecting daily activities.

The Forest Department has declared the leopard a man-eater and deployed a shooter, but the predator remains untraceable.

In view of the threat, Dr. Mukul Kumar Sati, Director of Secondary Education, ordered that schools under Bada, Chardhar and Dhandhari BEO circles remain shut until Tuesday. Online classes have been arranged for students.

District Magistrate Swati S. Bhadauria issued additional orders revising the timings of all schools and Anganwadi centres across the district. They will now function strictly from 9:15 am to 3:00 pm.

The victim was attacked in Gajald village under the Pauri Range of Garhwal Forest Division. Locals have also reported leopard sightings in Siroly village.

Residents have criticised the authorities for failing to control the situation, leading to early closure of markets and people returning home before sunset out of fear.

The administration has appealed to the public to remain alert and report any sightings to forest officials immediately.
