Kentucky, Dec 10: One student was killed and another remains in critical condition after a shooting at Kentucky State University on Tuesday afternoon, officials said. The attack occurred just days before students were scheduled to leave for winter break.

Police confirmed that the suspect, who is not enrolled at the university, was taken into custody within minutes of the first gunfire. The incident is believed to be an isolated and non-targeted attack.

Assistant Chief of Police Scott Tracy said campus police responded immediately and secured the scene before Frankfort officers arrived within four minutes. The university briefly went into lockdown as a precaution.

The shooting happened around 3:10 p.m. outside the Whitney M. Young Jr. residence hall. The university has not yet released the identities of the victims.

University President Dr. Koffi C. Akakpo described the violence as a “senseless tragedy” during finals week, saying the campus community is mourning the student who lost their life. Counseling services have been made available to students, faculty, and staff.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear thanked law enforcement for their rapid response and said the state remains in close contact with university officials as the investigation continues.

Kentucky State University, founded in 1886, has more than 2,200 students and 450 faculty and staff, according to its website.
