Mumbai, Dec 12: A new analysis based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) nutrient-density scoring has identified tomatoes as the healthiest fruit, placing them above avocados. The assessment evaluates fruits and vegetables on the basis of essential nutrients provided per calorie.

According to the findings, tomatoes achieved the highest nutrient-density score of 20.37, making them the top-ranked fruit in terms of overall nutritional value. The scoring considered key nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber.

Although avocados are widely regarded as a superfood due to their healthy fats and micronutrients, their higher calorie content lowers their nutrient-per-calorie ratio, placing them below tomatoes in this evaluation.

Health experts note that tomatoes offer strong antioxidant benefits, particularly due to lycopene, along with significant levels of vitamins A, C, and K, while remaining low in calories.

The study emphasizes that while tomatoes lead the list, consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables remains essential for balanced nutrition and overall well-being.
