Rhode Island (US), Dec 14: Authorities are continuing an intensive manhunt for a suspected shooter at Brown University after a deadly attack left two people dead and several others injured. Police said the suspect is a man dressed in black and remains at large, prompting heightened security measures across the campus.
With the assailant yet to be apprehended, university officials ordered a full lockdown, advising students, faculty and staff to stay indoors and remain alert. The shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon in an academic zone of the campus, as students were preparing for final examinations.

Brown University president Christina Paxson confirmed during a press briefing that the two individuals killed and eight of those injured were students. In total, nine people were wounded in the incident. Hospital officials reported that six victims are in critical but stable condition, one remains critical, and another is stable.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the shooting took place at the Barus and Holley building, which houses classrooms and laboratories for the engineering and physics departments. Law enforcement agencies swiftly responded to the scene and have launched a full-scale investigation.
US President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the incident, adding that federal authorities, including the FBI, were assisting local police. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee also stated that state police and emergency management teams are working closely with city officials to manage the response.
Brown University, a private research institution, enrolls approximately 7,300 undergraduate and more than 3,000 graduate students. The incident has sent shockwaves through the academic community, particularly as it occurred just a day before the anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in neighboring Connecticut.
The shooting has once again drawn attention to the persistent issue of gun violence in the United States. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, the country has recorded hundreds of mass shootings in 2025 alone, with more than 1,100 children and teenagers killed nationwide. The archive categorizes a mass shooting as any incident in which four or more people, excluding the shooter, are shot or killed.
