Udupi, Dec 15: The St Vincent De Paul Society (SVP), Katpady Church Unit, celebrated its golden jubilee on Sunday, December 14 marking 50 years of dedicated and selfless service to the poor and the needy, inspired by the ideals of charity and compassion.
The jubilee programme began with a graceful prayer dance by young girls, invoking god’s blessings on the celebrations. SVP president Theodore Pereira warmly welcomed the gathering and introduced the dignitaries and priests.



































Society secretary Hilda Barnes presented a comprehensive report highlighting the unit’s five-decade journey, its milestones and charitable initiatives. Founder members were fondly remembered, while long-serving members were honoured with shawls, bouquets and mementoes. All 25 active members were also felicitated for their committed service.
Chief guest, retired professor Archibald Furtado, lauded the society for its silent, transparent and consistent service, describing SVP as one of the most respected lay organisations in the Church.
Parish priest Fr Rajesh Passanha thanked the SVP team for their wholehearted cooperation and sustained support to parish and social activities over the years. Fr Preetham Menezes, director, SVD Seminary, congratulated the members for their efforts to uplift the poor and marginalised.
In his presidential address, Fr Charles Menezes, dean of Udupi and spiritual director, described SVP members as true friends of the poor and reminded that God works through compassionate hearts dedicated to service.
The celebration was graced by Parish Pastoral Council office-bearers and SVP members from eight sister churches of the Udupi deanery. Presidents and secretaries of these units were also honoured for their yeoman service.
Vice president Stany Pereira proposed the vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all members from the Society’s inception to its 50-year milestone. The programme was compered by Stany Pereira and witnessed by a large gathering of parishioners and guests.
Earlier in the day, the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Conception was celebrated, followed by a grand thanksgiving holy Mass at 12.20 pm, offered by Fr Charles Menezes, concelebrated by Fr Rajesh Passanha and Fr Preetham Menezes.
SVP Udupi deanery president Herald Buthello said the jubilee aptly reflected the spirit of the Society founded on the teachings of St Vincent de Paul and the vision of Blessed Frederic Ozanam.
The celebrations concluded with fellowship meals, including breakfast after the morning Mass and a community lunch at the Community Hall, fostering unity and joy among parishioners and guests.
