Karwar, Dec 28: President Droupadi Murmu has set a historic precedent by embarking on a sea voyage aboard a submarine, becoming only the second Indian President, after Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, to do so.
From the INS Kadamba Naval base in Karwar, President Murmu toured the INS Vaghsheer, an advanced sixth-generation Kalvari-class submarine of the Indian Navy. The submarine, part of the “Make in India” defence initiative, is among the most sophisticated vessels in the country.

The president was accompanied by the chief of naval staff, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, and other senior naval officers. The visit offered her a unique opportunity to observe at close quarters the challenges of deep-sea operations and the complexities involved in submarine missions.
On arrival at the naval base, President Murmu was received by Governor Thawarchand Gehlot, the minister for fisheries, ports and inland water transport, and the district in-charge minister Mankal Vaidya. Also present were Regional Commissioner Jayanti, deputy commissioner K Lakshmi Priya, ADGP Hitendra, and senior naval officials.
This historic visit highlights President Murmu’s engagement with the armed forces and marks a significant milestone in the ceremonial and operational interface of India’s highest constitutional office with its defence services.
