Oaxaca, Dec 29: At least 13 people were killed and nearly 100 injured after an Interoceanic train derailed in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, authorities said on Sunday.

The Mexican Navy said the train was carrying around 250 people, including nine crew members and 241 passengers. Of those onboard, 193 were reported to be out of danger, while 98 sustained injuries. Thirty-six of the injured are receiving medical treatment.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said in a post on X that five of the injured are in critical condition.

Officials said the derailment occurred between the towns of Chivela and Nizanda, near Asunción Ixtaltepec. Emergency services rushed to the site and rescue operations were launched immediately after the incident.

The Interoceanic Train, which began operations in 2023, connects key regions in southern Mexico and is part of a major infrastructure initiative aimed at boosting regional connectivity.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the derailment.
