Karbi Anglong, Dec 31: In a horrific incident of mob violence rooted in superstition, a married couple was brutally killed after being accused of practising witchcraft in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at No. 1 Beloguri Munda village in the Howraghat area. The victims were identified as 43-year-old Gardi Birowa and his 33-year-old wife, Mira Birowa.

According to reports, a group of villagers forcibly entered the couple’s house and attacked them with sharp weapons. After assaulting the couple, the attackers set the house on fire, resulting in both victims being burnt alive inside the premises.

Police rushed to the spot soon after receiving information and launched an investigation. All the accused involved in the attack have been arrested, and questioning is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events and motive behind the crime.

A senior police official told PTI that the region where the incident took place continues to be plagued by deep-rooted superstitious beliefs, which often trigger such violent acts.

The incident has once again highlighted the persistence of superstition-driven violence in parts of the country, sparking concern among authorities and civil society alike.
