Vancouver, Jan 1: An Air India pilot was offloaded from a Vancouver–Delhi flight moments before take-off after concerns were raised about his fitness to operate the aircraft, allegedly due to suspected alcohol consumption.

The incident, which occurred on December 23, came to light over a week later. Flight AI-186 experienced a delay of several hours as the airline arranged for an alternate pilot to operate the service.

According to Air India, Canadian authorities flagged concerns regarding one of the cockpit crew members just before departure. Following this, the pilot was removed from duty and taken for further inquiry.

“Flight AI-186 from Vancouver to Delhi experienced a last-minute delay after one of the cockpit crew members was offloaded before departure. Canadian authorities raised concerns regarding the pilot’s fitness for duty,” an Air India spokesperson said in a statement.

The airline confirmed that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed about the incident. The pilot has been taken off flying duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

“In line with safety protocols, an alternate pilot was rostered to operate the flight. Any confirmed violation will invite strict disciplinary action as per company policy,” the spokesperson added.

Air India expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers and stated that it is fully cooperating with local authorities as the inquiry continues.
