Dubai, Jan 4: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, on Saturday marked 20 years at the helm of the emirate, a period that has seen Dubai evolve from a regional centre into a global hub for tourism, trade, innovation and culture.

Sheikh Mohammed assumed leadership on January 4, 2006, following the demise of his elder brother Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum. What began as a solemn transition soon unfolded into two decades of rapid transformation driven by mega projects, economic diversification and long-term strategic planning that reshaped Dubai’s skyline and global standing.

Under his leadership, Dubai emerged as a symbol of architectural ambition and futuristic urban planning. Iconic landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building inaugurated in 2010, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Mall, Dubai Marina towers, Dubai Opera, Dubai Frame, Bluewaters Island with Ain Dubai, and the Museum of the Future have redefined the city’s identity and attracted millions of visitors from around the world.

Infrastructure development extended beyond real estate to transport and connectivity. The Dubai Metro revolutionised urban commuting, while massive investments in roads, bridges and tunnels enhanced mobility. The expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport further strengthened Dubai’s position as a leading global aviation, logistics and transit hub.

Sheikh Mohammed also introduced key policy initiatives to attract global talent and investment. The Golden Visa programme, launched in 2019, offers long-term residency to investors, entrepreneurs and skilled professionals. Free zones such as the Dubai International Financial Centre, Dubai Internet City and Meydan Free Zone created business-friendly ecosystems, while the Smart Dubai initiative pushed digital transformation through AI, blockchain and advanced e-governance.

Tourism became a cornerstone of Dubai’s growth strategy, supported by luxury hospitality brands, global events such as the Dubai Shopping Festival and Expo 2020 Dubai, and diversified offerings including desert safaris, theme parks and Ski Dubai. The sector has grown into a major contributor to the emirate’s economy.

Dubai’s development has been guided by long-term national visions, including Dubai Vision 2021 and UAE Vision 2031, which focus on sustainability, economic diversification, innovation, talent attraction and quality of life. These frameworks have shaped policy decisions and infrastructure planning over the years.

By reducing reliance on oil and building strong sectors in finance, trade, tourism, real estate and technology, Dubai has achieved sustained economic growth and global recognition. Two decades into Sheikh Mohammed’s leadership, the emirate stands as a leading centre for global business, culture and innovation, reflecting a vision that continues to shape its future trajectory.
