Mangaluru, Jan 6: The city police IT cell has intensified monitoring of social media platforms following a renewed surge in provocative messages, abusive content, hate comments and threatening posts that could disturb communal harmony. Acting under the Mangaluru city police commissionerate, the IT cell has been registering suo motu cases against those posting or even commenting on such content.
Despite earlier warnings by police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy that attempts were being made—often from abroad—to fuel communal hatred and disrupt social peace, such posts have continued to surface on Facebook and Instagram.

In recent cases, police booked individuals for sharing communally sensitive posts, inflammatory comments related to murder cases, derogatory remarks against political leaders, provocative reactions to local incidents, and posts linked to illegal activities such as beef transport. Separate complaints were also registered against multiple Facebook and Instagram account holders for spreading hate between communities, uploading obscene content, circulating private videos, and supporting banned organisations.
Over the last three months, police have taken action in at least eight major cases, leading to the detention of around 10 individuals, including persons traced to Mumbai and those returning from Saudi Arabia. City police have reiterated that strict legal action will continue against anyone misusing social media to disturb public order.
