Interfaith couple remarry at police station after family resistance

Hyderabad, Jan 9: An interfaith couple here married for the second time at a police station after facing initial resistance from the bride’s mother, police said.

The couple, Imran (26) and Bhavya Sri (24), have been in a relationship for the past four years and had married according to Christian rites four months ago. The bride’s family had converted to Christianity a few years ago following the death of her father.

With the bride’s mother opposing the alliance, the couple approached the police seeking protection and support. Police said the mother later asked the groom to marry her daughter as per Hindu traditions, to which he agreed.

Four days ago, the couple visited the police station, where the groom tied the mangalsutra to the bride in the presence of a few relatives. Police officials were not present at that moment, sources said.

The groom, who works in a bank, lives with his mother and widowed sister, both of whom did not oppose the marriage. The bride is employed in the software industry. Police said both are financially independent and earn good salaries.

The bride’s mother has now reconciled to the marriage. Though members of a right-wing outfit had initially opposed the wedding after learning about the interfaith relationship, they did not appear later, police added.
