Kundapur, Jan 11: The mysterious deaths of several monkeys across Kundapura taluk over the past month have not been caused by Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), health authorities have confirmed, bringing relief to villagers in the Western Ghats who were gripped by fear of the fatal viral infection.
The first fatalities were reported on December 14 in Hosangadi, where four to five monkeys were found dead. Around the same time, KFD cases were reported in neighbouring Shivamogga district, fuelling concern in Udupi district as well.
In Hosangadi’s Karuru area, although five monkeys had died, only one sample could be collected as the others had decomposed.

Faecal samples were also taken from the site and sent to a laboratory in Pune. A separate sample from a monkey found dead in Madamakki’s Marmannu area was similarly tested. The results confirmed that none of the monkeys had succumbed to KFD.
With KFD ruled out, questions have arisen about the cause of the deaths. Locals speculate that the monkeys, which frequently raid coconut, vegetable, and fruit crops, may have ingested poison, intentionally or accidentally. “It is possible someone sought to prevent crop damage and the monkeys consumed toxic substances,” villagers suggested.
“The lab report is negative for KFD,” officials said, emphasising that the KFD season has begun, and residents should remain vigilant. Awareness campaigns are underway in all affected villages, and DMP oil has been supplied to hospitals to guard against any potential outbreaks.
Authorities urge residents not to panic but to remain alert while the investigation into the cause of the monkey deaths continues.
