Mangaluru, Jan 19: A warrant accused who had gone absconding after the pronouncement of sentence in a robbery case has been secured by the Mangaluru East police.

The accused has been identified as Naveen Sequeira (52), a resident of Thokkottu Chambugudde, Permannur. A case had been registered against him in the years 2011 and 2012 at Mangaluru East police station under Crime No. 195/2011, invoking Section 392 of the IPC.

After trial, the court found the charges against the accused to be proved and, in 2015, sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 5,000. Subsequently, the accused challenged the order of the district court by filing a criminal writ petition before the high court.

After examining the petition, the high court modified the sentence and ordered one year of simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 15,000, directing the accused to undergo the sentence within 2022. The court further ordered that failure to comply would result in enforcement of the earlier district court order.

Following the pronouncement of the judgment, the accused went into hiding, prompting the court to issue a warrant against him. Acting on credible information, the Mangaluru East police station warrant execution staff, including ASI Machendranath Jogi, HC Abhishek and HC Narappa KB, secured the accused on January 14, from Suprabhata Bar and Restaurant at Honnakatte, Surathkal.

The accused was produced before the court, which, as per its earlier order, sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000.
