Vasco, Jan 25: A fire broke out at the Vasco jetty on Sunday, destroying fishing nets stored at the site and causing an estimated loss of around Rs 12 lakh, triggering concern among the local fishing community.

The nets, belonging to Premanand Dabholkar, were completely reduced to ashes in the blaze. While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, Dabholkar has suspected foul play, alleging that miscreants frequently gather in the area to consume alcohol.

He has demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and called for enhanced security measures at the jetty to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Local fishermen expressed alarm over the incident, stating that fishing equipment stored in open areas remains highly vulnerable. They urged authorities to take immediate steps to ensure better monitoring and protection of property and livelihoods.

The incident has been reported to the local authorities, who have assured action, even as investigations continue to determine the cause of the fire.
