Ludhiana, Feb 8: Ludhiana Police on Friday registered a case against the daughter-in-law of ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina and her family members in connection with an alleged Australian Permanent Residency (PR) fraud involving the legislator’s son.

An FIR has been lodged at the Daba police station against Navneet Kaur, a resident of Mohali currently living in Australia, along with six of her family members. Chhina is a first-time MLA representing the Ludhiana South constituency.

According to the complaint filed by Harpreet Singh, husband of the MLA, the family had allegedly spent around Rs 50 lakh to facilitate Navneet Kaur’s move to Australia following her marriage to their son Navkiranjit Singh. The couple went to Australia in 2018, where Navkiranjit travelled on a spouse visa, and later applied for Permanent Residency.

The complainant alleged that following matrimonial disputes, Navneet Kaur withdrew Navkiranjit’s name from the PR application without his consent. It was further claimed that disputes had earlier arisen between the two families over gold jewellery while the couple was in Australia, which eventually led to confrontation between the spouses.

Harpreet Singh stated that the marriage took place with the understanding that the couple would settle in Australia, and the alleged withdrawal of the PR application caused both emotional and financial loss to the family.

Police have booked Navneet Kaur, her parents Teja Singh Nagra and Harpal Kaur Nagra of Mohali, and relatives Kaka Singh and Phalel Singh of Patiala, Amar Singh Nagra of Sangrur, and Sukhdev Singh Patwari. The case has been registered under Sections 406, 420, 380 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Police officials said the IPC sections were applied as the couple had moved abroad in 2018, prior to the enforcement of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An investigation has been initiated.

When contacted, MLA Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina declined to comment on what she termed a private family matter, but confirmed that a police case has been registered against her daughter-in-law and her family.
