Mumbai, Feb 10: A couple was left critically injured after their scooter was allegedly rammed by a speeding car driven by a minor near Somaiya College in Vidyavihar late on February 5. The husband is currently on ventilator support, while the wife continues to remain in critical condition, police said.
The accident occurred around 11.15 pm near Gate No. 3 of Somaiya College on Tansa Pipeline Road. The injured have been identified as Ghumil Premji Patel (33), who runs a plywood business, and his wife Minal Patel (32), a private tutor. The couple, residents of Ghatkopar West, were initially rushed to Rajawadi Hospital and later shifted to Zynova Shalby Hospital due to the severity of their injuries.

According to police, the Patels were returning home on their scooter from their shop in Parel when a Kia Seltos car, allegedly being driven at high speed from the opposite direction, rammed into their two-wheeler. The car was being driven in a rash and negligent manner, resulting in severe injuries to both victims. Both vehicles were completely damaged in the impact.
Family members alleged that the stretch where the accident occurred was a known stunt spot for the minor. Videos purportedly posted by him on Instagram, showing car and bike stunts on the same road, surfaced online after the crash but were later deleted.
A member of the Patel family claimed that witnesses stated the car was travelling at around 120 kmph. “We found Instagram reels of dangerous stunts with his friends, including people lying on the bonnet and roof of a moving car, triple-seating on a two-wheeler and performing wheelies. These videos were deleted after the accident,” the family member said.
The complaint was filed by Mahesh Karamsi Patel, uncle of Ghumil Patel, after he was informed about the accident by a family friend in the early hours of Friday.
Confirming the action taken, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sameer Shaikh said an FIR has been registered against the owner of the car. Police investigations revealed that the vehicle was being driven by a 17-year-old boy. His father, who owns the car, has been booked for allowing a minor without a valid driving licence to drive the vehicle.
Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
