Udupi: Fisherman robbed of gold chain worth Rs 6 lacs in Malpe

Udupi, Feb 21: A 61-year-old fisherman was allegedly assaulted and robbed of a gold chain worth approximately Rs 6 lac near Malpe harbour.

The complainant, Dayananda Kundar (61), a resident of Badanidiyoor village, Malpe, has been engaged in fish trading activities at the Malpe harbour. As per his complaint, on February 20, he had gone to the harbour for work at around 3 am, as usual.

At about 4.30 am, he reportedly went to use the restroom at an office, within the harbour premises. When he was returning towards the harbour around 4.40 am, an accused person approached him under the pretext of inquiring about fish. With an intention to rob, the accused allegedly threw chilli powder on his face and dragged him a short distance.

Subsequently, two more unidentified persons joined the accused. The trio allegedly threatened the victim with a knife and demanded that he hand over the gold chain he was wearing. When he refused, the accused, identified as Muttanna along with two unidentified accomplices, assaulted him on his face and back, forcibly dragged him, and robbed his gold chain weighing about six sovereigns, valued at around Rs 6 lacs.

The accused also allegedly issued a life threat, warning the victim that he would be killed if he reported the matter to the police.

A case has been registered at Malpe police station.
