New Delhi, Mar 1: Congress MP from Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Sunday denounced the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in coordinated US-Israel strikes, calling it an act that warrants unequivocal condemnation. She also expressed deep concern over the mounting civilian casualties across the Middle East and stressed the urgent need to restore peace.
Invoking the words of Mahatma Gandhi, she reiterated his famous warning that “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind,” underscoring her belief that cycles of violent retaliation ultimately harm all sides.

In a post on X, Priyanka described the targeted assassination of the leadership of a sovereign nation by what she termed leaders of the democratic world as “despicable,” regardless of the justification offered. She said the escalation has drawn multiple countries into conflict at a time when the global community should be striving for stability rather than confrontation.
Khamenei’s death in the joint US-Israel strike is being viewed as a defining moment in Iran’s 46-year Shia-theocratic system. In the aftermath, Tehran has reportedly launched a large-scale offensive targeting US bases across neighbouring Middle Eastern countries, further intensifying regional instability.
Priyanka Gandhi appealed to Narendra Modi to prioritise the safety of Indian citizens caught in the conflict zone. She urged the Prime Minister to make every possible effort to ensure their swift and secure return to India.
As hostilities spread, Iranian paramilitary units reportedly launched drones and missiles aimed at several Gulf nations. Bahrain confirmed a strike targeting a US Navy fleet headquarters, while explosions and sirens were reported in Kuwait, Dubai, Doha, Riyadh and Bahrain. The UAE subsequently announced the closure of its airspace, leading to widespread travel disruptions.
With airspace across much of the region either restricted or closed, many Indian nationals remain stranded at airports in affected countries. The Indian government has issued advisories for travellers as the situation continues to evolve.
