New Delhi, Mar 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict in West Asia and reaffirmed India’s commitment to safeguarding its nationals in the region. Speaking at a joint press briefing with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, PM Modi emphasized that India stands firmly for peace and stability.
“India’s stance on the ongoing tensions globally is clear. We have always advocated for peace and stability, and when two democracies stand together, the voice for peace becomes even stronger,” he stated. Addressing the Gulf security situation, he added, “India supports the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. To ensure the safety of all Indian nationals, we will continue to work closely with all countries in the region.”

The comments follow escalating tensions in the Middle East after joint US-Israel strikes on Iran targeted Tehran’s missile capabilities and military infrastructure. The initial operation reportedly killed senior Iranian figures, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering retaliatory drone and missile attacks by Iran across Gulf nations, including Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. The strikes prompted temporary airspace closures and caused both military and civilian casualties, with US forces responding with counter-operations.
On Sunday, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by PM Modi, was briefed on the February 28 airstrikes in Iran and the subsequent regional escalation, focusing on the safety of the large Indian expatriate community. The official statement noted that the Committee expressed serious concern for the security of Indian citizens amid the intensifying confrontation.
