Kilauea volcano erupts spectacularly, lava fountains soar over 1,000 feet in Hawaii

Hawaii, Mar 11: Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii put on a dramatic display on Tuesday evening as powerful lava fountains shot high into the sky during the latest phase of its ongoing eruption.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the volcano produced sustained lava fountains rising more than 1,000 feet, with peak heights exceeding 1,300 feet — roughly comparable to the height of the upper floors of the Empire State Building.

The current eruptive episode began on December 23, 2024, and continues to show intense volcanic activity. Scientists said lava flows have already covered nearly one-third of the floor of Halema?uma?u Crater at the summit of the volcano.

Authorities have taken precautionary measures in view of the hazards posed by the eruption. The National Park Service has closed the summit area of the volcano due to the risk from volcanic fragments known as tephra.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency also temporarily shut down Highway 11, the main access route to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Officials warned that nearby communities on the Big Island, including Volcano Village and Mauna Loa Estates, could experience ash and tephra fallout.

The USGS has issued its highest volcano alert level, indicating that a major eruption is underway with potentially hazardous conditions both on the ground and in the air.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has extended an ashfall warning for areas around the national park until late evening, cautioning residents that volcanic ash in the air may cause breathing difficulties and disrupt essential services. Authorities have advised people in the affected areas to stay indoors, close doors and windows, and avoid exposure to outside air.
