Kasargod, Mar 13: A couple was found dead after allegedly hanging themselves at their house at Poyinachi in the Melparamba police station limits.

The deceased have been identified as Venugopalan Nair (55) and his wife Smita (45), residents of Poyinachi Paramba.

Their only son, M Shivanandan (19), an engineering student, had died two months ago after being hit by a train. It is learnt that the couple had been suffering from depression following his death.

On Friday, March 13 morning, the couple was found hanging inside their house.

Neighbours became suspicious when the house door was not opened even by 9 am. When they checked the house, the couple was found hanging inside a room.

Their son, M Shivanandan, who was a student of an engineering college in Mangaluru, had died on December 29 after being hit by a train during the Bekal Utsav.

It is said that Venugopalan Nair and Smita were mentally distressed after the untimely death of their only son. On Friday morning, both were found dead at their residence.

Venugopalan Nair had earlier been employed abroad and later ran a travel agency at Poyinachi.

Melparamba police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
