Patna, Mar 13: Panic has spread across parts of Saran district after five people died under suspicious circumstances since March 11, triggering fears of a possible spurious liquor tragedy.
Officials said two deaths were reported from areas under Panapur Police Station, while three others occurred in villages falling under Mashrak Police Station. The sudden fatalities have caused anxiety among residents and raised concerns about law enforcement and administrative oversight in the region.
Family members of the deceased have alleged that the victims had consumed illicit liquor shortly before their health worsened. According to relatives, the victims complained of symptoms such as blurred vision and severe restlessness—conditions often associated with suspected spurious alcohol consumption.

However, authorities have not confirmed the cause of death. Officials said a final conclusion will only be drawn after post-mortem and viscera reports are received. Police have taken custody of all five bodies and sent them for autopsy.
Senior district officials and police personnel rushed to the affected villages soon after receiving information about the deaths. The cases have currently been registered as “suspicious deaths,” and an investigation has been launched.
In response, police have intensified raids across the Mashrak and Panapur areas to track down those involved in the illegal liquor trade. Special teams have also been formed to dismantle suspected networks producing and supplying spurious alcohol.
Authorities have issued an alert across the district and are closely monitoring activities to prevent further incidents.
Bihar has enforced a complete ban on the manufacture, sale, consumption and transport of alcohol since April 2016. Despite the prohibition, incidents of hooch-related deaths continue to surface periodically from different districts in the state.
