Silchar, Mar 14: Sixteen-year-old Mayank Chakraborty has scripted history by becoming the first-ever chess Grandmaster from Assam and the wider North East region of the country.
The young International Master secured his final Grandmaster norm at the 8th GM Tournament held at Hotel Stockholm North in Stockholm. With this achievement, he has become India’s 94th chess Grandmaster.
Mayank delivered an impressive performance at the tournament, finishing first with 7 points out of 9 rounds. He defeated top-seeded players and maintained an unbeaten streak in the final rounds to seal the title.

Along with securing the final norm, Mayank also crossed the mandatory 2500 rating mark set by FIDE, fulfilling all requirements to earn the prestigious Grandmaster title.
The achievement has sparked celebrations in Silchar and across the state, with members of the sporting community hailing the milestone as a major boost for chess in the region.
Sports enthusiasts said the historic feat demonstrates that with dedication and hard work, players from the North East can reach the highest levels of international sport.
