Udupi, March 14: Auto drivers in Udupi have voiced strong displeasure over a sudden increase in the price of auto LPG at one of the city’s fuel stations. Drivers alleged that the price of auto gas at the Aegis Auto Gas Station has been raised by Rs 18 per litre compared to the rates charged at other gas stations in the city.
According to the drivers, the price hike came into effect abruptly on Friday afternoon, leaving many autorickshaw operators shocked and frustrated. They said that while most auto LPG pumps in Udupi city continue to charge the regular rate, the Aegis Auto Gas outlet has significantly increased the price, placing an additional financial burden on drivers who rely on LPG for their daily operations.

Auto drivers alleged that the situation is being exploited, particularly at a time when the supply of commercial LPG cylinders has been affected in several regions. Many drivers questioned why a higher price is being charged when other pumps within the city are still supplying gas at the normal rate.
The LPG supplied at the station is reportedly distributed by a private auto gas provider that supplies auto LPG in the region. Drivers pointed out that while the normal rate continues at pumps within Udupi city, the price has been increased at certain outlets on the outskirts.
On Saturday, several autos were seen lined up outside the gas station as drivers waited to refuel despite the higher price, as they had limited alternatives nearby. The long queues highlighted the dependence of drivers on the particular outlet for fuel supply.
When questioned about the price increase, pump owners reportedly told drivers that they had received a circular regarding the revised rates. However, the drivers demanded clarity and transparency regarding the price revision.
Auto drivers have urged the authorities concerned to intervene and ensure that the gas price is reduced and kept uniform across all outlets in the district. They warned that if the issue is not resolved soon, it could severely affect the livelihood of hundreds of auto drivers who depend on LPG to operate their vehicles.
M Hanif Manipura, general secretary of the Auto Drivers and Owners Association in Katapady, said, “Earlier the auto gas price was around Rs 62 per litre, but it has increased due to the ongoing conflict. Yesterday the price at the Udyavar auto gas station was suddenly raised to Rs 90 per litre. When we questioned the hike, the pump authorities said the new stock had arrived at a higher price while other stations are still selling gas from their old stock. This is unfair and amounts to exploiting auto drivers. The deputy commissioner should intervene and resolve the issue, otherwise we will be forced to stage a strong protest.”
