Ahilyanagar, Mar 16: The Election Commission of India has announced the by-election to the Rahuri Assembly constituency, with polling scheduled for April 23 and counting of votes on May 4.

The seat fell vacant following the death of senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and six-time MLA Shivajirao Kardile, who was considered a key political figure in the district.

With the announcement of the poll schedule, political activity has intensified across the district. Kardile’s son Akshay Kardile is being viewed as the BJP’s strongest contender for the seat. He had also been active in the constituency during the previous Assembly election.

Meanwhile, his brother-in-law Sangram Jagtap has publicly declared support for Akshay Kardile. Expressing confidence, Jagtap said the late leader enjoyed immense public support and that the family continues to have the blessings of the people. He also said efforts would be made to have the election held unopposed, but even if a contest takes place, they are confident of victory.

Political discussions have also intensified over the role of former minister Prajakta Tanpure, who is speculated to be moving towards the BJP. Tanpure, the nephew of Jayant Patil, has recently praised the state leadership including the chief minister and deputy chief minister on several occasions, fuelling speculation about his political stance.

Tanpure has stated that he will take a final decision after consulting party workers, but his role in the bypoll is being closely watched as he is considered an influential figure in Rahuri politics.

Meanwhile, Devendra Fadnavis has suggested that the by-election be held unopposed in view of the sympathy following Kardile’s demise. However, he also indicated that if the election is contested, the ruling alliance will fight it with full strength.

The Rahuri bypoll will be held on the same day as voting in the Baramati Assembly constituency, making both seats high-profile contests in the state. Polling for the constituencies will take place on April 23, 2026, while the results will be declared on May 4.

Political observers expect the campaign to focus on development issues as well as the sympathy factor following Kardile’s death.
