Kolkata, Mar 25: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced the retirement of jersey number 12 in honour of their legendary all-rounder Andre Russell, recognising his immense contribution to the franchise over more than a decade.
The three-time champions made the announcement during their pre-season event ‘Knights Unplugged 3.0’ on Tuesday. Russell, fondly referred to as the ‘Eternal Knight’, has also rejoined the setup as a power coach ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League season.
Russell enjoyed a remarkable 12-year stint with KKR from 2014 to 2025, playing 140 matches, scoring 2,651 runs at an explosive strike rate of 174.17, and claiming 123 wickets. He played a crucial role in the team’s title-winning campaigns in 2014 and 2024.
One of the most impactful all-rounders in IPL history, Russell became only the second player in the league to achieve the double of over 2,000 runs and 100 wickets. His standout season came in 2019 when he was named Most Valuable Player after smashing 510 runs at a strike rate of 204.81.
The two-time ICC Men's T20 World Cup winner (2012, 2016) also holds KKR’s best bowling figures in IPL history, returning 5 for 15 against the Mumbai Indians in 2021. With 122 wickets, he remains the franchise’s second-highest wicket-taker, behind Sunil Narine.
KKR CEO Venky Mysore said the decision reflects Russell’s deep association with the franchise. “He always wore number 12 proudly, and it has become synonymous with him. We wanted to honour that legacy by retiring the number,” he said.
An emotional Russell expressed gratitude, saying the journey with KKR had been special. “To be part of two championship-winning teams and to experience what it means to everyone here is incredible. Winning the IPL is a unique feeling. I thank the franchise for making this journey unforgettable,” he said.
