Madrid, Mar 26: Olympic gold medallist Carolina Marin has officially announced her retirement from professional badminton, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that included multiple world titles.

The 31-year-old shared the news through an emotional message on social media, confirming she will not compete in the upcoming European Championships in her hometown Huelva, despite receiving a wild card entry. “My journey in professional badminton has come to an end,” she said, adding that she did not want to risk further injury for a final appearance.

Marin revealed that recurring injuries influenced her decision, stating she wanted to stay true to her long-held stance of not pushing her body beyond its limits.

One of the sport’s most decorated players, Marin made history by winning gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she defeated P. V. Sindhu in the final. She also claimed three World Championship titles and multiple European crowns, becoming Spain’s most successful badminton player.

Reflecting on her career, Marin said her final appearance unknowingly came at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she was forced to retire hurt during the semi-final due to a knee injury.

Although she had hoped to bid farewell on court in Huelva, Marin said the city will still hold special significance as the place where her journey comes full circle.

Expressing gratitude to her supporters, she said she leaves the sport proud not just of her titles but of the respect she earned worldwide. Looking ahead, Marin added that she is ready to begin a new chapter and hopes to give back to the sporting community while continuing to promote the values of sport.
