Margao, Mar 27: With residents of Salcete raising concerns over pollution in the River Sal, the Bombay High Court has stepped in again, urging authorities to expedite stalled sewage infrastructure projects in Margao.

The court took note of delays in preventing untreated wastewater from flowing into stormwater drains and eventually into the river, and directed the Finance Department of the Government of Goa to fast-track financial approval for the proposed Vacuum Sewer System.

The project, being handled by Sewage Infrastructure Development Corporation Goa Ltd, aims to address persistent sewerage issues in low-lying areas such as Malbhat and the Gandhi Market region.

Although the High Court had earlier directed SIDCGL to complete the vacuum sewer network within 24 weeks, the deadline expired on January 29, 2026. Officials informed the court that while the tender process was completed in November 2025, the work order is yet to be issued due to pending financial clearance.

Observing the delay, the court emphasised the urgency of commencing the project before the onset of the monsoon. “Immediately upon obtaining financial approval, the work order should be issued and execution must begin,” the court stated.

The court also directed SIDCGL to secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Comunidade of Aquem, as part of the proposed pipeline is set to pass through its land.

Residents have been demanding swift action to restore the River Sal, considered a lifeline for the Salcete region, as concerns grow over increasing sewage discharge and environmental degradation.
