Mainpuri, Mar 29: A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district was left stunned after nearly Rs 10 crore was mistakenly credited to her bank account, prompting an investigation by authorities.

Rita Devi, a resident of Devganj village under Bichwa police station limits, received a message stating that Rs 9.99 crore had been deposited into her savings account at the Bank of India branch in Sultanganj. Prior to this, her account reportedly held a balance of around Rs 45,000.

The incident came to light when Rita, who was working in her fields at the time, received the alert. Initially suspecting fraud or a technical glitch, she visited a nearby ATM with her son to verify the balance. To their astonishment, the amount displayed confirmed the message.

Her son recorded a video of the ATM screen showing the balance, which soon went viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion around banking errors and financial safeguards.

Despite the unexpected windfall, the family chose honesty over temptation. “We don’t want such money,” Rita Devi said, adding that she had no intention of keeping funds that were not hers. Her son also stressed the importance of integrity and urged the bank to rectify the issue quickly.

The family, which depends on farming for its livelihood, promptly informed the bank about the discrepancy. Officials at the Bank of India have since launched a probe to determine whether the credit was due to a technical glitch, clerical error, or another issue.

Authorities are currently tracing the transaction details, and further action is expected once the source of the funds is identified.
