New Delhi, Mar 31: Low-cost carrier IndiGo announced on Tuesday the appointment of Willie Walsh as its new chief executive officer, signaling a strategic leadership shift as the airline accelerates its international growth plans.
Walsh, currently serving as director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), will assume his role at IndiGo after regulatory approvals. His tenure at IATA concludes on July 31, 2026, and he is expected to join IndiGo no later than August 3, 2026, succeeding Pieter Elbers, who stepped down as CEO on March 10.

Bringing decades of aviation leadership, Walsh has been instrumental at IATA in shaping industry strategies on airline profitability, sustainability, and regulatory frameworks. Before IATA, he led the International Airlines Group—parent of British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus—where he successfully managed complex airline operations and large-scale restructurings.
The appointment coincides with IndiGo’s strategic shift from a domestic low-cost carrier to a more globally competitive airline. The carrier has placed significant orders for wide-body aircraft, expanded its international routes across Europe and Asia, and is increasingly competing with full-service carriers on long-haul networks.
Walsh’s extensive experience in managing international airline operations is expected to support IndiGo in navigating this transition while aligning the airline with global standards. His departure from IATA will also mark the end of a tenure during which he was a leading advocate for airlines worldwide.
This leadership change underscores IndiGo’s ambition to strengthen its global presence as India continues to emerge as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets.
