Cyprus, Apr 2: Uzbek prodigy Javokhir Sindarov strengthened his bid for the title at the FIDE Candidates Tournament with a commanding victory over Fabiano Caruana, marking his third win of the tournament.
With sharp opening preparation, Sindarov caught Caruana off guard in the Queen’s Gambit Accepted, emerging from the opening with a superior position. The turning point came early, and by move 20, Caruana was already under heavy pressure. Sindarov maintained control throughout, converting his advantage with a direct attacking approach.

Reflecting on the game, Sindarov said he benefited from his preparation despite some uncertainty in exact lines, adding that he was satisfied with the overall quality of his play.
In another key clash, Anish Giri defeated Andrey Esipenko after navigating a sharp and unconventional opening battle. Giri’s bold king march and deep preparation paid off as Esipenko faltered in the middlegame, allowing Giri to convert his material advantage.
Meanwhile, Hikaru Nakamura and Wei Yi played out a tense draw. Nakamura, despite obtaining a slight edge in the endgame, missed a potential winning continuation, allowing the game to simplify.
India’s R Praggnanandhaa settled for a draw against Matthias Bluebaum in a balanced encounter that saw neither side gain a decisive advantage.
In the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament, Anna Muzychuk defeated Kateryna Lagno in a well-contested positional game, capitalising on a late error by her opponent.
Zhu Jiner also registered an important win to stay in contention. With the result, Muzychuk moved into a shared lead alongside Bibisara Assaubayeva, setting up an intense battle for the top spot.
As the tournament progresses, Sindarov’s impressive form and preparation have made him a standout contender, while the women’s section remains finely poised with multiple players in the hunt for qualification.
