Goa ST reservation group issues 15-day ultimatum to implement Assembly seat quota

Panaji, Apr 2: The Mission Political Reservation for Scheduled Tribes in Goa has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Government of Goa, urging it to coordinate with the Government of India to notify reserved seats for Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the Goa Legislative Assembly.

The organisation expressed concern over delays in implementing the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Act, 2025, which received Presidential assent over six months ago but is yet to be enforced.

It pointed out that the Act will come into effect only after the Centre notifies the appointed date in the Official Gazette, a step that is still pending.

With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, the group warned that any further delay could affect the timely implementation of political reservation for ST communities in the state. It also highlighted growing concerns among community members about potential hurdles in rolling out the legislation.

The organisation has urged the state government to take up the matter on priority with the Centre to ensure that the notification process is completed without further delay.
