Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 2: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched the Congress campaign in Kerala with a forceful and wide-ranging speech, blending personal reflections with pointed criticism of both the BJP-led Centre and the ruling Left government in the state.
Addressing a gathering in Chirayinkeezhu, the Wayanad MP spoke about her first year representing Kerala, describing the state as unique for its deep-rooted values of equality, compassion, and communal harmony. She invoked the legacy of Sree Narayana Guru, calling his ideals central to Kerala’s identity and reflective of India’s true spirit of coexistence.

Drawing from her experiences in Wayanad, she highlighted the contributions of Malayalis across professions—from healthcare workers and farmers to caregivers—emphasising a shared culture of service and resilience.
However, her address soon turned political, as she criticised the governance of the ruling Left Democratic Front. She raised concerns over unemployment, low wages, and what she described as a weakening public healthcare system, citing staff shortages and inadequate infrastructure. She also accused the state government of neglecting the concerns of ASHA workers, fisherfolk, and traditional sectors like coir.
On the national front, Priyanka Gandhi launched a strong attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party, blaming rising fuel and LPG prices on central policies. She warned that recent trade decisions could hurt MSMEs and farmers, increasing economic vulnerability.
In a sharp political remark, she accused the LDF of failing to effectively challenge the Centre, alleging a lack of accountability and resistance.
Framing the upcoming election as a choice between continuity and change, she urged voters to hold governments accountable at both state and national levels. She also outlined the Congress-led United Democratic Front’s welfare agenda, including proposals such as free bus travel for women, support for coastal communities, revival of traditional industries, and expanded employment opportunities.
Kerala is set to go to the polls on April 9 to elect 140 legislators, with Priyanka Gandhi expected to continue campaigning across districts including Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram, signalling an intense and closely fought electoral battle ahead.
