IMD issues yellow alert for Coastal Karnataka; thundershowers forecasted in 24 hours

Bengaluru, Apr 3: Coastal districts of Karnataka are set to witness increased rainfall activity, with thundershowers and lightning likely over the next 24 hours, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert covering several parts of the state.

According to the IMD, districts along the coast and Malnad belt are expected to receive moderate to heavy showers, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

The development comes amid a shift in weather patterns triggered by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is influencing rainfall across south interior Karnataka, coastal regions and the Western Ghats.

The early April showers have brought relief to residents who had been grappling with intense summer heat in recent days. Authorities have placed more than 14 districts under a yellow alert as a precaution, warning of gusty winds, lightning and intermittent spells of rain.

Cloud cover, light showers likely in Bengaluru

In Bengaluru, the weather is expected to remain mixed over the coming days. While daytime conditions will see moderate sunshine, evenings are likely to turn cloudy with chances of light showers in parts of the city.

The maximum temperature is forecast to range between 32°C and 34°C, while the minimum temperature will hover between 21°C and 23°C. Though rainfall in the city may remain scattered, a pattern of alternating sunshine and cloud cover is expected to continue.

Yellow alert across regions

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for April 4 across coastal Karnataka, Malnad and parts of south interior districts, forecasting moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. However, certain pockets in south interior Karnataka may see relatively lower rainfall, with dry conditions persisting in some areas.

Rainfall activity to intensify after April 10

The weather department has indicated that rainfall activity is likely to intensify across the state after April 10. Districts such as Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Hassan, Mysuru, Mandya and Kodagu, along with Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts, are expected to receive more widespread rainfall during this period.

Meanwhile, the IMD has cautioned that the possible emergence of El Niño conditions from June could influence the southwest monsoon this year.

Overall, heavier rainfall is likely in coastal and Malnad districts such as Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru, while Bengaluru and surrounding regions are expected to remain under cloudy skies with intermittent showers.
