New Delhi, Apr 4: India and Russia have renewed efforts to stabilise bilateral trade and expand economic cooperation, with a strong focus on energy security, logistics and investment amid evolving global dynamics.

The agenda was discussed at the Inter-Governmental Commission meeting co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov in New Delhi.

The commission, a key mechanism overseeing trade, economic, scientific and cultural ties, deliberated on ensuring stability in mutual settlements and supply chains, while emphasising improved market access and faster implementation of joint investments and projects.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, discussions covered trade, industry, energy, fertilisers, connectivity and mobility, along with emerging areas such as technology, innovation and critical minerals.

The talks took place against the backdrop of volatility in global energy markets due to the ongoing West Asia conflict. Russia indicated its readiness to increase supplies of crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India to meet rising demand.

Energy cooperation continues to remain a central pillar of ties, with Russia also highlighting a 40 per cent rise in fertiliser exports to India by the end of 2025 and expressing willingness to meet the country’s agricultural needs.

Civil nuclear cooperation also figured prominently, with both sides reviewing progress on additional units at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, which are being implemented as per schedule.

The MEA said both sides reviewed outcomes of the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit held in December 2025 and exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the West Asia conflict.

During his visit, Manturov also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. Discussions are learnt to have covered defence cooperation, regional security and energy stability.

The visit comes days after India cleared procurement of additional units of the S-400 missile system, signalling continued defence engagement between the two countries.

The talks are being seen as part of a broader push to deepen strategic partnership by strengthening economic resilience, securing energy supplies and expanding cooperation across sectors.
