Mangaluru: Court jails ganja accused for 7 years, imposes Rs 70,000 fine in Bantwal case

Mangaluru, Apr 4: The principal district and sessions court in Mangaluru has sentenced an accused to seven years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 70,000 in connection with a ganja sale case registered in Bantwal.

The accused, T P Farooq (50), a resident of Mangaluru Port, was found guilty, and the judgment was delivered on April 4, 2026, by principal district and sessions judge Basavaraj.

The case dates back to November 10, 2020, when police under Bantwal Town police station limits apprehended two individuals attempting to sell ganja illegally from a car near the Melkar bus stand.

The raid was carried out by then police inspector Cheluvaraj, during which 1.480 kg of ganja worth Rs 49,000 was seized.

A case was registered as Crime No. 126/2020 at Bantwal Town police station, and an investigation was launched. The then circle inspector T D Nagaraj completed the probe and filed the charge sheet before the court.

Following trial proceedings, the court convicted the accused and awarded the sentence. The prosecution was represented by Public Prosecutor Judith, who argued the case on behalf of the government.
