Guwahati, Apr 5: Rahul Gandhi, senior leader of the Congress Party, on Sunday launched a fierce attack on Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of corruption and divisive politics, and promising that the people of the state would hold him accountable.
Addressing a rally in Biswanath district, Gandhi said, “Himanta Biswa Sarma is the most corrupt and the most communal chief minister in the country. He has betrayed and misled the people of Assam—the evidence is before the public.” He added, “The people of Assam will never forgive his corruption—punishment is certain.”

Gandhi also invoked the legacy of renowned Assamese musician Zubeen Garg, drawing parallels between the singer’s life and Congress ideology. He praised Garg for working to unite communities across Assam and contrasted this with the alleged divisive politics of the BJP government. “Zubeen Garg worked his entire life to unite people of Assam. He never misbehaved with anyone. The Congress philosophy is also like that—to spread love against hatred,” Gandhi said.
He accused the BJP-led administration of promoting communal divisions for political gain, undermining Assam’s historical ethos of coexistence and mutual respect.
Stepping up his rhetoric, Gandhi warned of legal consequences for the Chief Minister if Congress comes to power. “Let him speak for some more days. After that, the Congress will form a government in Assam and legal action will follow even if he asks for forgiveness,” he said.
The remarks come ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, with polling scheduled for April 9 and counting set for May 4, setting the stage for a high-stakes political contest in the state.
